Chess for Kids - Chess for Kids: Session 1 This interactive discover based class inspires students to think ahead, visualize their goals, treat others with respect, and learn from mistakes. Classes are geared to suit children of all skill levels from chessling to checkmate artists. Students will build upon their knowledge through lessons, tournaments, variation games and more!This program is for all levels of ability - from beginners to more advanced players. Crochet for Adults - Crochet for Beginners Session 1 Learn basic crochet stitches such as chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet. Explore yarn types and what to use for each project and learn hook types and how to hold your hook. You will also learn to work in rows and in the round. Throughout the course, you will work on multiple small projects.Crochet Level two is for intermediate level crocheters. You will move to more difficult projects and more complex stitch variations and techniques with detailed shaping and finishing.Students should bring one skein of worsted weight, 100% acrylic yarn & one skein worsted weight 100% cotton yard. A light colored yarn would work best. A 5mm crochet hook (metal is recommended). The ones with ergonomic grips are the most comfortable to use, but any will do. Also bring a pair of scissors. Tracey will give more detail/visual assistance on how to read a yarn label for registrants so they know how to accurately pick out their yarn.Instructor: Tracey SpoonerAbout Our Instructor:Tracey Spooner is the STEM teacher at Lions Pride Preschool at Chelmsford Community Education. Mantra Meditation with Restorative Yoga Poses NEW! - Mantra Meditation with Restorative Yoga Poses NEW! The start of the New Year is a great time to set intentions and develop new sustainable routines to strengthen your body and mind. This course will introduce you to meditation and guide you in establishing and deepening your current practice. Courtney is a certified meditation instructor, and has completed extensive training at the Chopra Center. Through this course, you will discover what meditation is, how mantras can guide your practice, and ways you can incorporate a practice into your daily life. Each session will include breathwork, gentle stretching, guided meditation, and an offering of Reiki or sound healing. Restorative yoga is the practice of asanas (the physical positions during yoga), each held for longer than in conventional yoga as exercise classes, often with the support of props such as folded blankets, to relax the body, reduce stress, and often to prepare for pranayama or breath regulation.Restorative yoga deeply relaxes the body, stills a busy mind, releases muscular tension, improves mobility, flexibility, and the capacity for healing and balancing. Learn to Play Cribbage - Learn to Play Cribbage Cribbage combines luck and skill, and the basics can be learned in one night. It was invented in England in the early 17th century, is known as the national card game of Britain. Cribbage is a card game for two or four players who use a cribbage board to "peg" points that they earn by playing certain combinations of cards. Come enjoy this one-night introduction to a great game. No prior experience needed.Students who already own a cribbage board should bring them in along with a deck of cards.
Instructor: Martha CoravosAbout Our Instructor:Martha Coravos was a teacher for many years until she decided to follow a long-time passion and was accepted to law school at age 34. Martha's law career saw her as a courtroom clerk and a prosecutor for a great majority of her career. She was also an adjunct professor at Middlesex Community College and Southern New Hampshire University. After retiring in 2017, Martha put her energy into her interests including music, cribbage, and traditional Greek cooking. She is excited to share these skills with the community!

After his postgraduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy in 2018, he enrolled in UMass Lowell’s music studies program and began his career in music education. His teaching experience has consisted of private lessons for all ages, exam preparation, group piano classes, rock ensemble coaching, choir directing, theory tutoring and classroom instruction. Over the course of his career, Danny has been the go-to pianist for several theater productions and churches in the Greater Boston area. While pursuing his degree, he took a two year pandemic-related hiatus where he expanded his lesson roster to over 40 students and began working with Newton Public Schools, playing piano and providing instructional assistance for seven choirs in the district. Since resuming his academics, he has continued to work with the award-winning choirs at Day Middle School, and he has recently stepped into the role of Music Director for Hawkapella, UML’s longest standing acapella group. Danny has a very easygoing personality, and he prioritizes developing a love of music that keeps students motivated. In addition to a structured curriculum based around well known lesson books, he encourages students to learn any song they like, adapting it to their precise skill level. He often incorporates games and activities to reinforce concepts and prevent burnout. Lastly, he makes sure to give students a chance to express themselves through compositional and improvisational (jam) sessions. When he is not at school or teaching, Aaron likes to watch tv, play video games, hang out with friends, hike, travel, and crochet. Kidding Around Yoga - Kidding Around Yoga Session 1 This welcoming practice introduces children to yoga teaching flexibility and strength as well as self-soothing breathing techniques. Practicing yoga poses encourages children to clear their mind and focus, building self-confidence and coordination while teaching respect for self and others. This focus translates to the ability to act and behave mindfully and with compassion, to be brave, to know happiness and to find an inner peace. Gentle Flow Yoga - Gentle Flow Yoga - Session 1 This class is slow paced and restorative, taking students through a series of poses that encourage mindfulness of the body and attention to breath. The start of the New Year is a great time to set intentions and develop new sustainable routines to strengthen your body and mind. This course will introduce you to meditation and guide you in establishing and deepening your current practice. Courtney is a certified meditation instructor, and has completed extensive training at the Chopra Center. Through this course, you will discover what meditation is, how mantras can guide your practice, and ways you can incorporate a practice into your daily life. Each session will include breathwork, gentle stretching, guided meditation, and an offering of Reiki or sound healing. His teaching experience has consisted of private lessons for all ages, exam preparation, group piano classes, rock ensemble coaching, choir directing, theory tutoring and classroom instruction. Over the course of his career, Danny has been the go-to pianist for several theater productions and churches in the Greater Boston area. While pursuing his degree, he took a two year pandemic-related hiatus where he expanded his lesson roster to over 40 students and began working with Newton Public Schools, playing piano and providing instructional assistance for seven choirs in the district. Since resuming his academics, he has continued to work with the award-winning choirs at Day Middle School, and he has recently stepped into the role of Music Director for Hawkapella, UML’s longest standing acapella group. Danny has a very easygoing personality, and he prioritizes developing a love of music that keeps students motivated. In addition to a structured curriculum based around well known lesson books, he encourages students to learn any song they like, adapting it to their precise skill level. He often incorporates games and activities to reinforce concepts and prevent burnout. Lastly, he makes sure to give students a chance to express themselves through compositional and improvisational (jam) sessions. Beginning & Intermediate Drawing for Adults - Beginning Drawing for Adults Beginners Class:This fun, 4-week drawing course will help the beginning artist take their stick figures to a new level. Foundation principles will be taught so that by the end of this course, students will have the confidence they need to draw what inspires them. Topics Include: drawing tools, lines & Form, Values, Composition, Contours, Ellipses and Perspective.Intermediate Class:The intermediate class builds on what you learned in the beginners class. It is designed to take the intermediate student to the next phase in their artistic development. Leave those drawing insecurities outside the studio door through a series of drawing exercises. Throughout the course, you will work on multiple small projects.Crochet Level two is for intermediate level crocheters. You will move to more difficult projects and more complex stitch variations and techniques with detailed shaping and finishing.Students should bring one skein of worsted weight, 100% acrylic yarn & one skein worsted weight 100% cotton yard. His teaching experience has consisted of private lessons for all ages, exam preparation, group piano classes, rock ensemble coaching, choir directing, theory tutoring and classroom instruction. Over the course of his career, Danny has been the go-to pianist for several theater productions and churches in the Greater Boston area. While pursuing his degree, he took a two year pandemic-related hiatus where he expanded his lesson roster to over 40 students and began working with Newton Public Schools, playing piano and providing instructional assistance for seven choirs in the district. Since resuming his academics, he has continued to work with the award-winning choirs at Day Middle School, and he has recently stepped into the role of Music Director for Hawkapella, UML’s longest standing acapella group. Danny has a very easygoing personality, and he prioritizes developing a love of music that keeps students motivated. In addition to a structured curriculum based around well known lesson books, he encourages students to learn any song they like, adapting it to their precise skill level. He often incorporates games and activities to reinforce concepts and prevent burnout. Lastly, he makes sure to give students a chance to express themselves through compositional and improvisational (jam) sessions. When he is not at school or teaching, Aaron likes to watch tv, play video games, hang out with friends, hike, travel, and crochet. Aaron started his career in 2018 as a paraprofessional at South Row Elementary, and continues to work there in the afternoon as part of the Extended Day Care team. For the past 4 years, he has worked at the Marshall Middle School in Billerica as a school counselor. Aaron has been a licensed Zumba instructor since 2018 and has taught at Community Education since 2019. Since then he also became a Zumba Toning, Zumba Kids, Strong Nation (HIIT), RYT 200 yoga, and Pound Fit Instructor. When he is not at school or teaching, Aaron likes to watch tv, play video games, hang out with friends, hike, travel, and crochet. As a group exercise instructor, he believes that everyone should try a group exercise class and that one class will not be enough.The atmosphere, community, instructor, and attitude will make all the difference. So keep trying new classes until you find the right fit! His goal is to make sure you are moving and having fun! Remember there are no mistakes; we only have accidental solos! Group exercise is not only great for the body, but also for the mind and soul.

Gentle Flow Yoga - Gentle Flow Yoga - Session 1 This class is slow paced and restorative, taking students through a series of poses that encourage mindfulness of the body and attention to breath. You will start with grounding breath work, continue with yoga postures that will open the body and end with a relaxing savasana (5-10 minutes of laying on the back). This flow will help you to reduce stress and cultivate a sense of peace and well- being. Please bring a yoga mat and water bottle to class. Yoga blocks are optional but helpful to new students. Students of all levels are welcome.Instructor: Jane LynchAbout our Instructor:Jane is a 200 hour certified yoga instructor who has been teaching yoga for just over 4 years. Her belief is that yoga is a personal journey for each one of us, and it should be easily accessible to every "body". Jane's personal favorite discipline is slow flow yoga where you can integrate your mind,, body, and breath during these practices. The mind-body connection helps to reduce anxiety, emotional tension, and mood swings. it has also been scientifically proven to decrease blood pressure.

Beginning & Intermediate Drawing for Adults - Beginning Drawing for Adults Beginners Class:This fun, 4-week drawing course will help the beginning artist take their stick figures to a new level. Foundation principles will be taught so that by the end of this course, students will have the confidence they need to draw what inspires them. Topics Include: drawing tools, lines & Form, Values, Composition, Contours, Ellipses and Perspective.Intermediate Class:The intermediate class builds on what you learned in the beginners class. It is designed to take the intermediate student to the next phase in their artistic development. Leave those drawing insecurities outside the studio door through a series of drawing exercises. Please have a sketch book, graphite pencil kit, pencil sharpener, ruler and kneaded eraser available to you prior to the start of class.Instructor: Deb Arsenault
About our Instructor: Deb Arsenault has a BFA in visual communication from Northern Illinois University, but her love of drawing and painting started at an early age when she started taking private lessons at 12 years old.
